Interview

Hello Shadrach – tell us a bit about yourself!

I’m a 20 year old footballer, from Ireland, play for Leyton orient, live in London.

How do you prepare for an (important) competition? (music, rituals, etc.)

I HAVE to pray, family are religious so am I, then in the changing room, for some time now I’ve been listening to “waving flags”, I don’t know why…I just do.

You were born in Ireland. When you moved to England, you played football in Hornchurch’s youth academy. Why did you moved to England?

I moved to England because I knew if I wanted to make it pro, I’d have to sacrifice my home to do so, and thankfully my family came to England to support me which I am still grateful for.

Shadrach you joining the youth academy of Leyton Orient FC in 2018. How did you get into the youth of Leyton Orient FC ? And who helped you the most?

I was at Hornchurch at start, we played Leyton orient in the FA youth cup, we got battered 4-0 in that game and I thought it was over for me there because youth cup is a place where scouts are at and that’s where u get picked up, so knowing my journey at Youth cup was finish, I was devastated, but the day after our defeat against Leyton Orient, the chief scout at Orient phoned me and said I done well and wanted me to come in to train the day after, I was over the moon and I knew this was my time.

On 1 February 2019, after receiving international clearance from FIFA allowing you to play competitive football in England, you signed a professional contract with Leyton Orient FC. How important was that moment for you ?

It was a very proud moment for me and my family, knowing all the hard work I did on and off the pitch paid off.

In 2019, you was loaned out to Isthmian League club Bishop’s Stortford FC, where you score your first goal. How did you experience these loan period?

Them loans was really needed, coz 1) I’ve missed out on a lot of game period coz of not having my international clearance and also is to show where I am at in the game, knowing if I bossed that league, I was ready to jump up a league.

After your time by Bishop’s Stortford FC, you was loaned out to Aldershot Town FC. Did you noticed a lot of difference between these clubs?

Yeah there was a big difference, firstly they was full time, the tempo of the game is a lot quicker and you got to be on it from the first to the final whistle, because if not 7/10 you’d be punished.

Shadrach, you have played matches for the national team of Republic of Ireland. What was it like to join the national football team of Republic of Ireland ?

Yeah that’s a proud moment for me and my family to have been called up for international, was pretty amazing, good footballers for sure and very high standards.

If you had to choose, what is the best game you’ve ever been involved in?

I’d say West Ham, playing against top dogs, e.g. Antonio, big strong player.

What are your targets for the rest of this season?

Just to be able to play as much games as I can this season.
