So Emmanuel Onariase – tell us a bit about yourself!

My name is Emmanuel Onariase, and I’m a right footed central defender.

What type of defender are you ?

Both ball playing and no nonsense defender, adaptable to both depending on what the manager wants.

How do you prepare for an (important) competition? (music, rituals, etc.)

Eat well in the week, sleep on time, do extras after training/ stretching & meditation. Keep my routine consistent.

How important was your youth time at West Ham United FC in your development?

Massive because being tall, I didn’t have the best technical/dribbling ability so during my time it improved my technique and skill level massively. I learnt game understanding too.

You signed your first professional contract in April 2015. How important was that moment for you ?

It was a life changing moment and a big reward for working hard through the years. It was really positive because then I went from the youth team to training with the first team, which improved me as a player.

After your time by West Ham United FC, you moved to Brentford FC. Did you noticed a lot of difference between these clubs?

Yes, the club philosophy was different. At the time, Brentford had just rid of their Academy so it was only the B team and the first team. As a B team player, the coaching staff went into more detail about every aspect of our game. I began to understand the reasoning behind the actions or plays that I had learnt at West Ham.

On 1 January 2017, you joined League Two strugglers Cheltenham Town FC on loan until the end of the 2016–17 season. And you finished the season with 24 appearances. What can you remember about your first team debut with Cheltenham Town FC ?

I remember losing to Colchester haha. It was good to be playing competitive first team football. I remember putting in a decent performance but unfortunately we still lost.

By Rotherham United FC, you was loaned out to Cheltenham Town FC and Dagenham & Redbridge FC. How did you experience these periods?

I went back to Cheltenham on loan, where I didn’t play as much as I had expected. But I guess that’s football!
I then went to Dagenham on loan and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there as I was playing consistently. The club has a really good fan base and great team spirit.

Emmanuel, you have played at several football clubs. At which club did you learned the most?

At every club I have learnt significant parts of my game. Brentford was a pivotal stage in my career because we went into so much detail about my positioning, body shape and range of passing. We spent at least half an hour most days before training studying the game and analysing clips. These theory sessions were so important because it showed me players in my position executing these skills. I then used these theories and positioning when I started to play competitive first team football.

On 3 August 2020, you signed a two-year contract with League Two club Scunthorpe United FC. What are your targets for this season?

My targets are:
– to play as many games as possible
– to put in as many good performances as possible
– to keep as many clean sheets as possible
– to score as many goals as possible
– to help the team get to the playoffs
